How to Make Healthy Dog Treats at Home

With so many recent dog food recalls, pet owners everywhere are looking around for other healthy and safe alternatives. While many dog owners are taking to the all-natural options found at the store, the best option may just be to make your own at home.
Here’s what you’ll need:

Cooking spray
2, ½ cups of whole wheat flour
1 cup of wheat germ
½ cup of flax seed
1 tablespoon of honey
3 eggs
½ cup of olive oil
1 cup of water
½ cup of applesauce
½ cup of pumpkin puree

Instructions:

1. Begin by preheating your oven to 350°F.
2. Coat a baking sheet with the cooking spray, and set it aside for later.
3. Combine the flour, flax seed, and wheat germ in a large mixing bowl, and set it aside as well.
4. In another mixing bowl, combine the honey, oil, water, eggs, applesauce, and pumpkin puree.
5. Mix thoroughly until everything is combined.
6. Then, pour the concoction into the bowl with the dry ingredients and mix together.
7. Once it’s mixed, form it into a disc shape on a well-floured surface to keep it from sticking. You should make the dough about 1/4” thick.
8. Cut dog bone shapes into the dough using a cookie cutter and place them on a baking sheet 1 inch apart.
9. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until the treats become brown and hard.

Just make sure to let the completely cool before handing them over to your dog.

Storing them in an airtight container will also help ensure they start fresh longer.
